Oliva Cigar Co.

Oliva Cigar Co. is one of the most well-known and sought-after cigar brands in the world as well as an influential producer of tobacco in Nicaragua. Though it began as a family brand, with its origins in Cuba, Oliva is now the second largest producer of tobacco in Nicaragua, making 15 – 16 million handmade cigars a year. They are known for utilizing high-quality Nicaraguan grown tobacco while incorporating the rich Cuban tradition of cigar-making.

History

Like many cigar companies, the roots of Oliva lie in the tobacco fields of Cuba, where Melanio Oliva, the founder of Oliva, grew cigar tobacco in the 1800s. The business remained in these fields until Melanio’s grandson, Gilberto, searched for a better place to continue the business after the Cuban Revolution.

Though he was a cigar broker at the time, Gilberto returned to growing and producing tobacco to help the family business thrive. The first step was finding the ideal soil, climate and tobacco for cigars outside of Cuba, which he found in Nicaragua along with a number of Cuban cigar companies that had already moved there. He began to produce cigars in the late 1960s, until he was forced to move his operations during the Sandinista Revolution. His misfortunes didn’t stop there, as a number of disasters followed that propelled him to traverse Panama, Honduras, Mexico, and the Philippines to continue his cigar business.

Within that period, Gilberto became head of production for Nestor Plasencia Sr.’s factory in Honduras, and this is when the first Oliva cigar was produced. He worked tirelessly to save money in order to open his own factory and rejoin his sons in Nicaragua. Today, Oliva is the second largest grower of Cuban-seed tobacco and produces cigars that are regularly ranked amongst the best in the industry.

Oliva Cigars

Oliva has one of the widest selection of cigars to choose from, especially when compared to other premium cigar brands. They use tobacco from the Esteli, Condega and Jalapa regions of Nicaragua, encased in a variety of wrapper leaves. Despite its range, Oliva only uses tobacco that is fully-cured, fermented and aged with expertise. The result is a rich, flavourful cigar that is perfectly balanced.

Oliva Cigar Collections

One of Oliva’s best-selling cigars is the Oliva Serie O, which was introduced in 2001. This is a puro—made entirely of Nicaraguan Habano seed tobaccos. As a result, this is a quintessentially Nicaraguan cigar with a distinctly “Oliva” flavour profile. The Oliva Serie G came from its original name “Oliva Grand Cameroon”, which offers a Nicaraguan core with a mild wrapper. Since this makes the cigar slightly softer, this is a great starter cigar for novice smokers.

The Oliva Serie V is known for a unique blend of Nicaraguan long-filler tobacco that includes some Ligero and a Habano sun-grown wrapper. This is one of Oliva’s most high-profile cigars, and it stayed on Cigar Aficionado’s “Top 25” list from 2008 – 2012, a recognition of its unparalleled blend and flavour. This is a full-bodied cigar with nuanced layers of coffee and chocolate that is laced with subtle notes of spice, making it a perfectly satisfying treat for any cigar aficionado.

Oliva Cigar Price

With such a large selection of cigars, Oliva has something to offer for anyone from beginners who are value-conscious to cigar aficionados who are looking for the ultimate experience. All Oliva cigars offer a premium experience that highlights the way in which Nicaraguan tobacco can hold its own.
