LA SELECCION DEL LECTOR

La Historia de Los Lectores

Beginning in Havana in 1865, workers in cigar factories began paying a reader, or lector, to read aloud as they went about their delicate and precise work.

The first of these lectores were rollers who took turns reading aloud and were compensated by their coworkers.  Later, workers would contribute part of their wages to hire lectores.

The Lector read from sources selected by the workers, including newspapers and classical literature; two favourites were Romeo y Julieta and The Count of Monte Cristo, from which the cigar brands derived their names and inspiration for their logos.  This beautiful tradition spread to Tampa in the late 1800s with Cuban immigrant workers.

The selection of increasingly provacative reading materials by workers during times of increasing social and political tension fuelled ideas of unionisation and labour movements, which proved problematic for factory owners.

Following two catastrophic strikes in 1920 and 1931 owners began removing lectors from cigar factories.

In celebration of the storytellers, we have selected four cigars that also have stories to tell.

– Arturo Fuente Don Carlos Edicion de Aniversario

– Casa Turrent 1942 Robusto

– Tripa Larga Torcedor Rojo Gran Canon

– Te-Amo WSS Gran Corto – Honduras Blend
