Romeo & Julieta Cigars

Named after William Shakespeare’s tragic lovers, Romeo & Julieta is a premium cigar brand that originated in Cuba in 1875. Currently, it is managed by Habanos S.A. which is operated by the Cuban government.

After it was established as a partnership between Inocencio Alvarez and Manin Garcia, it was acquired by Jose “Pepin” Rodriguez Fernandez, who had an obsession with the Shakespeare play the brand was named after. It was said that he tried to purchase the palazzo where the play was set (Palazzo Capuleto), and when he couldn’t, he built his own in Havana.

Under the direction of Don Pepin, Romeo & Julieta grew quickly into a brand favoured by members of high society in the western world. He was known to throw parties for the wealthy across the Americas and Europe, and even personalized cigar bands for his customers. At one point, he was printing as many as 20,000 different labels at a time!

Romeo & Julieta Churchills

Famously, Sir Winston Churchill was one of Romeo & Julieta’s biggest fans. His favourite cigar, which was a Parejo from the brand called the Julieta No. 2, became the “Churchill” after his visit to Cuba in 1946. To this day, the Churchill remains one of Romeo & Julieta’s most popular cigars. This is a powerful cigar with strong notes of spices, earth, coffee and nuts.

The popularity of the original Churchill has spurred the production of various versions of it, which includes a Short Churchill, a Petit Churchill and a Wide Churchill. The Short Churchill, in particular, has become one of the best selling cigars from the brand. It is known for its strong chocolate flavours accompanied by a hint of wood, earthiness and coffee.
