Quasi d’Orsay Cigars

Quasi d’Orsay History

Quasi d’Orsay was created by the Cuban state tobacco company, Cubatabaco, exclusively for the French market in 1973. The story goes that a Ministor in France specifically made a request to Cubatabaco to create a French cigar. Soonafter, the brand was established, with its name taking inspiration from the wharf along the Seine where the tobacco office was located. The brand was consequently developed with solely the French taste in mind, and remains the only brand made in Cuba at the request of a different country.

About Quasi d’Orsay Cigars

As the brand was developed for the French palate, original Quasi d’Orsay cigars were known for being extremely mild in flavour.  They were also typically wrapped in light wrappers that matched its lighter profile. All cigars from the brand are tripa larga, totalmente a mano — long filler, totally hand-made — and utilise tobacco from the famed Vuelta Abajo region.

The brand joined other Cuban cigar brands under Habanos SA once the cigar industry was nationalised. While the original sizes were considered mild to medium-bodied, Habanos SA recently transformed the brand from a regional one to a global one and updated the flavour profile to be more complex. However, Quasi d’Orsay cigars still tend to be milder in taste and impart a balance of aromatic, woody, and slightly dry flavours. They are also easily recognised by their Claro (light brown) and Colorado Clara (mid-brown) wrapper colours, which are frequently preferred in France.

Quasi d’Orsay No. 54

Newer cigars from the brand were blended to incorporate more character and depth. One particular  size worth mentioning is the Quasi d’Orsay No. 54, which received a high rating of 93 from Cigar Aficionado and is noted as “quite remarkable”.  It is a subtle and refined Cuban cigar that is both sweet and savory with a younger, less developed flavour. Its flavours may be on the milder side, but it still offers a range of well-balanced flavours that include pepper, coffee, earth and sweet caramel.

Quasi d’Orsay No. 50

The No. 50 is another extremely popular vitola released  from the brand recently, and it is a Petit Robusto. It has garnered high praise from cigar aficionados for its beautiful craftsmanship as well as an intoxicating mild-medium strength flavour. This smaller cigar has an airy, open draw that imparts a floral smoke that is both interesting, nutty and slightly dry within a compact smoke time of 45 minutes.
