Joya De Nicaragua

Joya de Nicaragua Cigars

Established in 1968, Joya de Nicaragua is known as Nicaragua’s oldest premium cigar brand. Joya translates to “jewel” in English, so Joya de Nicaragua means “Jewel of Nicaragua”.

History

When a strict embargo was placed against Cuban imports in the US in 1962, many cigar makers fled to other countries to continue producing cigars. One such country was Nicaragua, which had fertile volcanic soils well-suited to growing premium tobacco. It was during this tobacco boom that Joya de Nicaragua was born.

Unfortunately, Joya de Nicaragua shortly fell prey to the Sandanista Revolution in the 1970s, which destroyed its factory and brought on another US embargo, now against Nicaragua. This, with other added difficulties, led to deterioration within the company over the next few decades. In 1994, while still recovering, the company and brand was purchased by Dr. Alejandro Ernesto Martinez Cuenca with a mission to revive the brand.

The revival of the Brand

In order to restore the company to its former glory, Martinez Cuenca restructured the company and brought back its former rollers and blenders. Then, thanks to the cigar boom of the 1990s in the United States, Joya de Nicaragua experienced a period of steady growth. It eventually became known for creating Nicaraguan puros – cigars that only use binders, fillers, and wrappers from Nicaragua. However, the cigar brand also produced cigars using tobacco from various locales around the world.

In 2001, they released the Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970, which instantly became a best-seller and its signature cigar. This is a puro with a potent blend of Nicaraguan black tobaccos wrapped in a dark Nicaraguan wrapper. The result is a strong, peppery cigar with deep and intense flavours.
