The Story of Hoyo de Monterrey Cigars
Founded by Jose Gener in 1865 in Cuba, Hoyo de Monterrey Cigar is one of the best-selling Cuban cigar brands in the world. The name Hoyo de Monterrey was inspired by the fertile plantation that Jose purchased in 1860, which was located on a river’s edge. It features a concave terrain with a low-lying position that is often sought-after by premium tobacco growers. And so, the brand was aptly named “the Hole of Monterrey”.
This plantation lies in the town of San Juan y Martinez, at the heart of Cuba’s well-known tobacco zone, Vuelta Abajo. This is where the world’s most sought-after Cuban tobacco is born, and why Hoyo de Monterrey cigars have such a uniquely creamy texture that is both complex and smooth.
Are Hoyo de Monterrey Cigars Good?
All Hoyo de Monterrey cigars are long-filler cigars that are completely hand-made. They are extremely well-constructed, which is apparent in the solid grey ash and the sweet aroma that emerges during its burn. It’s no surprise that their cigars are beloved in the cigar industry, even amongst the most discerning cigar aficionados.
The Epicure series houses some of Hoyo de Monterrey’s most acclaimed cigars, with both the Epicure Especial and Epicure No. 2 making top-25 lists on Cigar Aficionado. The Double Corona from the brand is equally praised, delivering well-balanced flavours that deserve to be savoured. With an extraordinary ability to create nuanced blends with deep flavours, Hoyo de Monterrey cigars are both intricate and quintessentially Cuban.
