About Cuaba Cigars
Cuaba is a relatively new Cuban cigar brand that was created in 1996 by the president of Habanos, Francisco Linares, and it is a post-revolution cigar brand. The goal of the brand was to create a line of double-figurado shaped cigars, a style that was popular in the early 20th century but had declined in popularity since. At the time, very few figurados were being commercially rolled and produced. Cuaba was created to revive this once-popular shape, bringing it back to the premium cigar market and showcasing the craftsmanship that Cuba is known for.
The brand was first launched in London, where traditional Cuban cigars are still widely celebrated. The Cuaba name comes from Taino Indians, the indigenous population that inhabited Cuba before the Spanish landed on the island. The name refers to the type of bush that Taino Indians used to light their cigars.
How Cuaba Cigars are Made
The Cuaba range is composed of medium to full-strength cigars, using tobacco from the premium Vuelta Abajo region in Cuba. All Cuaba cigars are hand-rolled in the Romeo y Julieta factory in Havana. The most well-known vitolas are the Cuaba Exclusivos and the Cuaba Distinguidos.
Known for their unique shape, Cuabas are rolled in the shape known as the Double Figurado, with the 2008 Piramides Edicion Limitada as the only exception. A double figurado features two tapered heads, instead of just one that is featured on most cigars. This shape is difficult to accomplish through hand-rolling and showcases the highest level of craftsmanship and expertise. Each Cuaba cigar is hand-made by Grade 7 rollers, signifying the highest certification in the trade. This is the reason that Cuabas often come in varied shapes, despite being rolled in standard lengths. Cuaba cigars are rolled without the use of molds, making them extremely difficult to produce and execute.
Current Cuaba Vitolas
The current Cuaba line consists of a number of cigars in the perfecto shape, including the Cuaba Divinos, Cuaba Distinguidos, Cuaba Exclusvos, Cuaba Diademas. These blends are personally formulated by Carlos Izquierdo Gonzalez, one of the last people in Cuba who could roll the figuarado shapes and a champion of Cuban cigar culture.
The Cuaba Divinos is the smallest of the collection and packs a ton of flavour into its petite body. It is a highly rated cigar well-known for its balance of sweet and smoky notes within its strong and full-bodied smoke. It brings forth notes of honey, moist earth, and pepper layered underneath a blanket of wood and spice. This cigar is perfect for those who want to experience an intense body within a shorter smoke time.
