Cohiba Cigars

To understand Cohiba cigars origin, we need to step back a bit. The word ‘cohiba’ translates to ‘tobacco’ in the ancient language of Taino. But in the cigar world, Cohiba points to one of the most well-regarded cigar brands in the world. Its position as a cult favourite may be due to its reputation as Fidel Castro’s own preferred cigar shortly after the Cuban Revolution.

At the time, a local cigar roller was making hand-rolled cigars for one of Fidel’s bodyguards. When he shared it with Fidel, he immediately fell in love with its premium quality and unique blend of flavours. This local cigar roller’s house was then turned into the famed El Laguito Factory, where Cohiba cigars are still created to this day.

Initially, Cohiba was a private label that only supplied cigars to Fidel Castro and high-level officials in the Cuban government. It was often used as a diplomatic gift, which gave it an upscale allure. Much to the delight of cigar lovers, Cohiba eventually released its cigars to the public in 1982.

Cohiba cigars retained a high level of exclusivity and luxurious appeal through limited production and a high bar for quality. Even now, Cohiba is well-known for pairing tobacco of the highest standards with exceptional craftsmanship. Only the finest leaves picked from the Vuelta Abajo region are used. Then, these leaves go through a third fermentation in wooden barrels, which lends a particularly smooth flavour to these cigars. The end product comes with unmatched quality and a distinct flavour that ranges from medium to full-bodied.

Because Cohiba is such a respected and desirable brand, there is always a risk that you’re purchasing a counterfeit product. To inspect whether your Cohiba cigar is authentic, first look for a smaller head within the larger holographic Taino Indian head on the band. Check that the upper/lower border, as well as the head logo, are holographic. Additionally, ensure that the word ‘Cuba’ and the Cohiba logo repeat throughout the upper/lower border of the band. Please note that Cohiba’s labels and bands have evolved over time, so this may not apply to all Cohiba cigars.

We stock a number of Cohiba’s most revered cigars and we ship to Melbourne, Sydney and the wider Australian region. Cohiba branded cigars range from $50 AUD to $200 AUD per cigar, with packs of up to 25 available in our boutique.
