The Bolivar Cigars – Cuban

Bolivar is a relatively small, pre-revolution Cuban cigar brand currently managed by Habanos SA. It is known for its extremely robust and rich flavours, Though it has a considerably smaller range of sizes than other well-known Cuban cigar brands, Bolivar cigars are often favoured by the most experienced cigar enthusiasts.

History of Bolivar

Bolivar was first established in 1902 by Jose Fernandez Rocha and named after Simon Bolivar, a powerful South American general known for his strength and for freeing South America from Spanish rule. His military prowess is one of the biggest inspirations for the brand, as Bolivar is known for creating cigars with extremely strong and potent flavours.

Following the death of Rocha, the brand was sold to the Cifuentes family and its production was moved to the famous Partagas Factory in Havana. Many Bolivar is still produced there today. Soon after, Bolivar cigars became quite popular internationally and became one of the main exported brands at the time.

The Bolivar 

With the spirit of the South American Revolutionary very much a part of the brand, Bolivar cigars are known for being some of the strongest cigars on the market. Because of how uniquely robust their blends are, they are very sought after by cigar aficionados, especially those who prefer a stronger flavour.

The strong taste of these cigars come from making ample use of ligero (leaves at the very top of tobacco blends) in its blends. Additionally, these cigars only use tobacco from the premium Vuelta Abajo region, which lend to their deep and full-bodied flavours.

Bolivar cigars are currently all handcrafted with long filler leaves, or “totalmente a mano, tripa larga.” Though its product line consists of a few sizes, each cigar is expertly crafted to feature Bolivar’s signature boldness.
