Macanudo Cigars History
Despite being one of the most well-known and respected Dominican Republic cigar brands today, Macanudo’s origins were much more humble. When General Cigar Company purchased the Temple Hall cigar factory in Jamaica, they acquired all of Temple Hall’s existing brands, which included Macanudo. At the time, Macanudo was just a small premium cigar brand that was created for the British market.
Once Macanudo was acquired, Edgar Cullman, General Cigar’s CEO, set out to revamp the brand and grow its worldwide presence. Cullman enlisted Alfons Mayer and Ramon Cifuentes, two seasoned cigar-industry veterans to help formulate and create the new Macanudo cigar. Macanudo’s first cigar, Macanudo Cafe, was introduced to the market in 1971 after three years of development. This involved pairing the world’s best tobacco with a three-year aged Connecticut wrapper to create what was marketed as “the ultimate cigar”.
Macanudo Cigars Today
Since its launch, Macanudo has experienced immense growth throughout the world, becoming one of the most sought-after premium cigar brands. The production of Macanudo cigars moved to the Dominican Republic in 2000 and continues to utilize premium tobacco that is processed through a lengthy and unique curing process. As a result, Macanudo cigars are known for their extremely well-developed and multi-layered flavour profiles.
A good product starts with great ingredients, and all Macanudo tobacco leaves are air-cured for 30 days, then fermented for up to 6 months for a deep flavour and aroma. Wrapper leaves are aged for a minimum of two years and subsequently transported to Dominican rum barrels for additional flavour and maturation. These flavours are then preserved when Macanudo cigars are individually wrapped before they are put into boxes.
Macanudo Maduro
The Macanudo Maduro is one of the flagship cigars of the brand, sporting a distinctively dark wrapper and a silky feel. While this cigar possesses a similar blend to Macanudo’s Cafe, the original Macanudo cigar, its flavour profile is deepened by its maduro wrapper. Despite its complexity, this cigar remains medium-bodied and balanced, bringing forth tons of creaminess and peppery smoke throughout. Both smooth and complex, this cigar perfectly balances a pleasant, medium-bodied smoke with deep, woody and peppery flavours.
