Fuente Fuente Opus X

Fuente Fuente Cigars

Arturo Fuente – Family, Tradition, Pride, and Tobacco Excellence

The Arturo Fuente cigar company was born in West Tampa, Florida in 1912. Arturo Fuente, a 24-year-old Cuban immigrant of the Spanish-American war started the company ten years after arriving in the United States in search of new beginnings. However, they would not come easily: the family’s story is one of hardship, perseverance and sheer will. These were immediately tested shortly after the company’s incorporation, disaster struck, and the Fuente factory along with all the company’s tobacco was destroyed in a fire.

These qualities were tested almost immediately when, shortly after its incorporation, the Fuente factory was destroyed along with all the company’s tobacco stock. The losses were immense, compounded by the Second World War and the Great Depression, which further halted any possibilities of Fuente pursuing his dream. It was not until 1946, twenty-two years after the fire which almost destroyed them, that the Fuente brand was relaunched, this time from the family home. The house became a hive of activity: Arturo’s wife was a full-time roller, whilst his two sons, Arturo Jr and Carlos, were given quotas of 50 cigars per day to roll after school. Cigar sales were conducted strictly within the Tampa area, on a cash-only basis.

A turning point in the company was the transfer of ownership from Arturo to Carlos; Carlos purchased the company for exactly one dollar from his father, with ambitions of expansion beyond Tampa. He began to sell cigars on credit, opening several accounts and travelling throughout Florida, before setting his sights on New York.

The Cuban embargo would irreversibly alter the course of the Fuente company. Carlos, having foreseen the impending embargo, acquired enough Cuban tobacco to sustain the business for three years. With this precious time, the new patriarch began to search for tobaccos similar to the rich, full-flavoured Havana blends which the company had been selling. He relocated to Nicaragua; however, his factory was burnt to the ground during the Nicaraguan Revolution.

One final move was made to the Dominican Republic, with neither Carlos nor his son, Carlos Jr, willing to surrender their dream. The Santiago factory was opened in September 1980 and produced the Hemingway line, restoring the disappearing figurado shapes to their former renown. By the 1990s, Tabacalera A. Fuente was vertically integrated and earning critical acclaim. A meticulous attention to detail, coupled with the refusal to rush the hands of time in ageing their tobaccos and blends, has allowed the Fuente name to become synonymous with cigars of only the highest quality.

Fuente Fuente Opus X

One cannot discuss Fuente without mentioning their crowning glory: the Fuente Fuente Opus X line. After having been told that he would never be a great cigar maker for the fact that he did not grow his own wrapper leaf, Carlos Fuente Junior was unable to forget these words, nor was he able to accept that the fertile soil of the Dominican Republic was unable to grow premium wrapper leaf. With the support of his father, Carlito acquired land and began to dream of the world’s first Dominican puro, comprised entirely of Dominican wrapper, binder and fillers. The result: a cigar that has amassed a global, cult-like following, revered by connoisseurs for its richness, complexity and superior quality.
