Fonseca Cigars

Fonseca cigars remain within the Cuban portfolio as one of the few remaining emblems of pre-revolutionary Old Havana: a time and place which run deep within the hearts and imaginations of cigar smokers. The brand’s story is one of hard work, perseverance, passion and ambition, all qualities which allowed Fonseca to transcend their birthplace and become well renowned the world over.

The company’s patriarch, Don Francisco Fonseca, was a well-respected businessman and tobacco expert who in 1892 established a small cigar manufacturing operation in the heart of Havana. Armed with ambitions that could not be confined to the island, his migration to New York saw the establishment of another factory in Tribeca in 1903. Despite this move, his love for his homeland was unquestionable: upon registering the Fonseca company in 1907, the bands which adorned the puros he produced proudly displayed both the Statue of Liberty and the Morro of Havana.

As a man, Fonseca was known for his sensibility, intelligence, and sartorial elegance, as well as for his attention to the finest of details. These qualities were seen in the cigars produced under his name: each cigar was draped in fine white paper for protection from fluctuations in atmospheric conditions, as to capture the eye of consumers. Fonseca puros were also the first to be presented in aluminium tubes, which served the purposes of protection and elegance in presentation.

Fonseca cigars are as quiet and understated as the man who created them. However, when one pays close attention to them, the plumes of voluminous smoke reveal a profile defined by herbaceous qualities, sweetness and mineral undertones, all undercut by an unparalleled smoothness.

Production of Fonseca cigars continued uninterrupted post-revolution; today, the fine Fonseca cigar is still produced at the Lázaro Pena Factory in Havana, following the traditional methods implemented by Don Fonseca over one hundred years ago. All Fonseca cigars are made entirely by hand and individually wrapped in fine Japanese paper for their protection, ensuring consumers receive only the highest quality attainable. The company’s portfolio is comprised of lighter-bodied cigars, utilising tobacco from the Vuelta Abajo – one of Cuba’s (and indeed the world’s) premier growing regions.
